MatCalc is a small software program I wrote several years ago to make mat cutting calculations easier and less error-prone. If you attended one of my mat cutting lectures, you saw it in operation. To see a larger picture of the MatCalc screen, click the picture to the left. To download the approximately 1.7 megabyte file, click the MatCalc title. Once you have the program downloaded: (1) Unzip the contents of to a folder on your computer. (2) Go to the folder where you unzipped the installation software. (3) Double-click MatCalcSetup.exe and follow the instructions on the screen. Complete instructions for using MatCalc are under the MatCalc help menu in "Using MatCalc."

MacBeth Color Checker

The MacBeth Color Checker is a panel of precise color swatches that can help you establish a reasonable corresponcence between what you see on your screen and what you see in a print. Click the title to download a zipped jpeg copy of the panel. Don't try to get your printer to reproduce exactly the colors you see on the screen. Any extended attempt to do that is a free ticket to the funny farm. Just try to get it reasonably close.

Skin Tones

One problem with the MacBeth color checker is that it doesn't include patches that replicate skin tones, and skin tones are the sine qua non for color calibration. Here's a zipped color target that Dick Matcalf located that includes several different skin colors. It's a fairly big file, about 1.14 megabytes, but it can give you the kind of resolution you need when you're trying to get the printer to do what the screen is doing.

Mat Cutter Manual

Click the heading to read a PDF copy of the manual for our mat cutter. If you'd like to have a copy on your computer, right-click the heading and select "Save Target As..." You need to have Adobe Reader (formerly Acrobat Reader) installed on your computer to read the file. If you don't have Adobe Reader, you can download it by clicking the bold name.
